Sichuan Airlines is set to expand its European operations with the launch of nonstop flights between Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU) and Madrid Adolfo Suárez-Barajas Airport (MAD), further solidifying its presence on China-Europe routes. The new service, scheduled to begin on April 27, will operate four times per week, establishing the only nonstop connection between Chengdu and Madrid.
With the launch of the 5,723-mile (4,973-nautical-mile) route, Madrid will become the ninth European city accessible nonstop from Chengdu. Sichuan Airlines currently operates flights from TFU to Istanbul, Moscow Sheremetyevo, Rome Fiumicino, and St Petersburg, with Athens also under consideration as a potential destination.
The expansion aligns with a broader trend of Chinese airlines increasing their reach across Europe, capitalizing on cost efficiencies and high demand for China-Europe travel. According to OAG Schedules Analyser, Sichuan Airlines' growth is complemented by other Chinese carriers, including Air China and Hainan Airlines, which connect TFU to Frankfurt, London Heathrow, Milan Malpensa, and Vienna.
While Sichuan Airlines and other Chinese carriers continue to expand aggressively, European airlines have been scaling back operations to China, citing rising costs and reduced demand. Lufthansa and British Airways discontinued several routes to China in 2024, while Scandinavian Airlines and Virgin Atlantic withdrew entirely from the Chinese market.
The competitive advantage gained by Chinese airlines flying over Russia has further widened the gap, allowing them to maintain profitability and increase frequency on China-Europe routes. In contrast, European airlines face higher operational costs and longer flight times due to rerouted paths.
Sichuan Airlines continues to strengthen its presence in China-Europe flights, leveraging Russia airspace advantage and strategic growth to dominate the international airlines market. With a focus on competitive expansion and cost efficiency, Sichuan Airlines is poised to lead the next wave of global aviation connectivity.
