The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind and rain across South West England on Sunday, warning residents of strong gusts up to 60 mph (100 km/h) and heavy rainfall that could lead to localized flooding and travel disruption.
The UK Department for Transport (DfT) has also advised drivers to prepare for hazardous road conditions due to heavy rain and strong winds, particularly on exposed routes.
Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge explained that the current weather system is being driven by a tropical air flow originating from the Atlantic Ocean, which will intensify as it moves across the UK.
The UK weather impact will stretch beyond Devon and Cornwall, reaching Yorkshire and areas further north, making it a nationwide weather concern for the weekend.
High Winds: Gusts of 50-60 mph (80-100 km/h) could cause disruption to travel, power outages, and coastal hazards.
Heavy Rainfall: Up to 70mm (2.75 inches) of rain expected on higher ground, increasing the risk of local flooding and difficult driving conditions.
Coastal Hazards: The Maritime and Coastguard Agency warns of dangerous sea conditions, urging the public to stay away from beaches, cliffs, and coastal paths.
Transport Disruptions: The UK Department for Transport advises travelers to check routes before heading out, with potential delays on roads, railways, and ferry services.
The UK Highways Agency advises drivers to slow down, maintain a safe distance, and avoid travel unless necessary during severe weather conditions.
With strong winds, heavy rain, and coastal hazards, residents in South West England should stay alert and follow safety advice from the Met Office, Environment Agency, and Coastguard Services. Travelers should check the latest transport updates and take extra precautions when venturing out during the storm.
