The City of Darwin has announced plans to revamp Smith Street in Darwin's CBD, aiming to create a greener and more dynamic pedestrian hub.
The council has selected GHD to carry out the concept design for the Smith Street Streetscape project. The desired outcomes of the project would see more greenery and shade introduced, improved pedestrian and transport access and existing amenities upgraded along a specific section of the street.
City of Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said the project will seek to transform Smith Street into a more attractive, "vibrant and liveable" destination to visit.
"Not only will we see more trees, but we also hope to see the installation of bike and scooter lanes, upgrades made to pedestrian infrastructure, more street furniture and more public art opportunities included in the concept design," he said. "Once the concept design has been developed, we will share it the with the community and stakeholders so people can give us their feedback."
The Northern Territory government has committed $3 million to the project, with City of Darwin to deliver the project. Construction is expected to commence in March 2025 with works forecast to be complete by June 2025.
