Millions of UK and European residents are set to travel abroad during the Christmas and New Year period, from December 20 to January 2, according to ABTA – The Travel Association.
This festive season marks one of the busiest times for international travel, particularly for families with young children. December 22 is expected to be the peak day for departures, while Christmas Day remains the quietest.
Winter Sun and Snowy Escapes Dominate Travel TrendsFor those chasing warmer climates, top destinations include the Canary Islands, Southern Spain, Portugal, Turkey, and Dubai. Meanwhile, travelers seeking a snowy, traditional Christmas are flocking to the ski resorts of France, Austria, Switzerland, and Scandinavia.
City breaks are also popular, with New Year celebrations and winter markets attracting tourists to Amsterdam, Budapest, Dublin, Paris, Prague, and Vienna.
Travel Surge Across Airports and ChannelsUK airports are bracing for millions of departures, with 500,000 travelers expected at Stansted, 400,000 at Luton, and similar numbers at Manchester. Heathrow is anticipating its busiest December yet, with passenger numbers projected to increase by 21% on Christmas Day, despite it being the quietest travel day. Scottish airports, including Edinburgh, report peak traffic on the Fridays of December 20, December 27, and January 3.
Additionally, hundreds of thousands are crossing the English Channel via ferries or the Channel Tunnel.
He also urged travelers to plan ahead due to busy roads and public transport, recommending that holidaymakers allow extra time to reach departure ports. ABTA members are on hand to assist with travel advice and queries.
