NEW DELHI — The U.S. Embassy in India has unveiled an additional 250,000 visa appointments for Indian travelers, including tourists, skilled workers, and students. This significant move is aimed at helping Indian applicants secure timely visa interviews, enhancing travel opportunities, and further strengthening the close ties between the United States and India.
For the second consecutive year in 2024, the embassy has already processed over one million non-immigrant visa applications. This summer, U.S. consulates in India reported handling a record number of student visa applications, ensuring that all first-time applicants received confirmed appointments. The embassy is now focusing on boosting commercial ties, reuniting families, and promoting tourism.
Statistics show that more than 1.2 million Indians traveled to the United States in 2024, representing a remarkable 35% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Currently, approximately six million Indians hold non-immigrant visas for the United States.
U.S. Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti highlighted the ambitious goal set by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Joe Biden to expedite the visa process, expressing pride in the advancements made toward this objective. He commended the dedicated consular teams at the embassy and its four consulates for their relentless efforts to meet the growing demand for visas.
Indian students have emerged as the largest group of international graduate students in the United States, comprising over 25% of the one million foreign students studying in the country. The United States remains a top choice for Indian students, alongside Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. In 2023, the U.S. issued more than 140,000 student visas to Indian nationals, marking the third consecutive year of record numbers.
In a bid to enhance the visa application experience, the U.S. government is working on initiatives to improve visa processing technology, aiming to reduce waiting times and streamline the application process. This includes plans for introducing more digital tools, allowing applicants to manage their visa applications and appointments online more efficiently.
With the increase in available visa appointment slots, the chances of securing a visa are expected to rise significantly. Easier access to visas will not only benefit travelers but also support economic growth through increased tourism and business investments.
Additionally, the U.S. Embassy is hosting a series of informational webinars for potential travelers, covering topics related to the visa application process, travel tips, and cultural exchange opportunities. These initiatives reflect a commitment to fostering deeper connections between the two nations and promoting mutual understanding among their citizens.
