Mexico's Tourism Revenue Soars by 36.3% in 2024

Mexico experienced a significant boost in international tourism revenue during the first half of 2024, with a 36.3% increase compared to pre-pandemic figures from 2019, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).

US$16.2 Billion in Revenue Generated

In the first half of 2024, Mexico's tourism sector generated an impressive US$16.2 billion, an increase of US$4.3 billion over the same period in 2019. This also reflects a 6.9% rise compared to 2023 figures. Despite the revenue growth, international tourist numbers decreased by 1.1%, with 236,324 fewer visitors compared to 2019.

Tourist Spending Increases

While fewer tourists visited, their spending rose. The average expenditure per international visitor in the first half of 2024 reached US$744.50, up by 0.5% year-over-year and US$200 more than in 2019.

June 2024 Sees Continued Growth

In June 2024, Mexico recorded a 2.9% increase in international arrivals, welcoming 3.6 million tourists, up from 3.5 million in June 2023. Tourist spending during this month totaled US$2.3 billion, a slight 0.9% increase from the previous year. However, the average spending per tourist dropped by 2%, amounting to US$639.40.

Uneven Recovery Across Regions

Despite overall growth, some regions, such as Bajio and Northern Mexico, have yet to recover fully to pre-pandemic levels. However, the tourism sector's contribution to Mexico's GDP increased by 7.4% in the first quarter of 2024, driven primarily by domestic tourism and services.
