On October 1st and 2nd, 2024, the AX Palace in Sliema, Malta, hosted a pivotal GSTC Sustainable Tourism Training, reflecting the ongoing partnership between the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). This collaboration, which began with a Memorandum of Understanding signed the previous year, focuses on enhancing sustainability in Malta’s tourism sectors through the implementation of the GSTC Criteria.

The training was led byÃÂ Dr. Ioannis Pappas,ÃÂ GSTC Director for the Mediterranean Region, who shared his extensive knowledge through practical examples and industry insights. His sessions equipped participants with tools to implement sustainable practices in tourism businesses and destinations.

The training session saw 68 attendees deepen their understanding of these international sustainability standards. Notable guest speakers enriched the event, including Thomas Loughlin, Program Manager for Sustainability at Booking.com, and Roza Tsirigoti, Social Responsibility Manager at the NJV Athens Plaza HotelâÃâ¬Ãâthe first in Greece to earn GSTC Certification. Maria Lougari, General Manager of the Castelli Hotel in Zante, shared valuable lessons from their journey towards GSTC Certification, providing practical insights into the pursuit of sustainable tourism excellence.
