Iberia, Spain's flag carrier, has received its first A321XLR, becoming the launch operator of the latest single-aisle aircraft globally. This CFM LEAP-1A-powered plane will initially operate regional flights within Iberia’s European network, with its first transatlantic journey from Madrid to Boston scheduled for later in November.

Spain’s national airline, Iberia, has just welcomed its latest fleet addition: the A321XLR, a long-haul single-aisle aircraft offering enhanced comfort and efficiency. Designed to seat 182 passengers in a two-class configuration, Iberia's A321XLR includes spacious lie-flat seats in business class, each providing direct aisle access. Passengers across all classes will experience the new Airspace cabin, which features XL bins with 60% more luggage capacity, making boarding smoother for both travelers and crew. Onboard connectivity at each seat and an advanced lighting system further elevate the in-flight experience, promising a more comfortable journey.

The A321XLR represents the latest innovation in the A320neo family, extending range and payload to meet modern airline demands. Capable of covering up to 4,700 nautical miles—15% more than its predecessor, the A321LR—the XLR boasts 30% lower fuel burn per seat compared to older single-aisle aircraft, alongside reduced NOx emissions and noise, supporting sustainable operations. Airbus has already received over 500 orders for this aircraft, underlining the industry’s confidence in its capabilities.

After a successful maiden flight in June 2022, the A321XLR underwent a rigorous testing phase with three dedicated test planes. The aircraft is also SAF-ready, able to operate on up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) today, with Airbus aiming for full 100% SAF compatibility by 2030. With Iberia’s acquisition of this advanced aircraft, passengers can look forward to enhanced travel experiences on both regional and transatlantic routes.
