The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced the continued expansion of its Turbulence Aware Platform, with six airlines joining the initiative in 2024.

Recent additions include Asiana Airlines, British Airways, Scoot, and Singapore Airlines, underscoring the platform's growing importance in enhancing aviation safety and efficiency.

As air travel demand rises and weather patterns shift, managing turbulence remains a critical focus for the aviation industry.

The Turbulence Aware Platform pools anonymized turbulence data from participating airlines' flights, offering real-time, accurate insights for pilots and dispatchers.

This data enables optimized flight paths that avoid turbulence, improve fuel efficiency, and reduce CO2 emissions.

In addition to increased airline participation, IATA has broadened the platform's data transmission capabilities through agreements with The Weather Company, Lufthansa Systems, PACE TXT, APiJET, BCI, and Storkjet.

These partnerships integrate Turbulence Aware data into cockpit instruments, flight planning, and tracking systems, streamlining access for pilots and dispatchers without requiring additional tools or screens.

Launched in 2018, Turbulence Aware has become a vital resource for mitigating the impacts of turbulence, a leading cause of passenger and crew injuries.

Currently, over 25 airlines contribute and utilize data from the platform, covering more than 2,600 aircraft.

In 2023, the platform generated 38 million reports, supporting not only airline operations but also meteorological offices for turbulence modelling and academic research.

With its expanding network and capabilities, Turbulence Aware is set to play a pivotal role in advancing aviation safety and operational efficiency in the years ahead.
