Air New Zealand has announced its largest-ever purchase of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), securing over 30 million litres to be uplifted from Los Angeles and San Francisco through to February 2026.

Manufactured by Neste in Singapore, the SAF is produced from 100% renewable waste and residue materials, such as used cooking oil and animal fat waste. The fuel delivers up to an 80% reduction in carbon emissions across its lifecycle compared to conventional fossil-based jet fuel.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported that SAF production reached 1.3 billion litres in 2024, marking a doubling from 2023 volumes. However, this accounts for only 0.3% of global jet fuel production, significantly below earlier projections of 1.9 billion litres due to delays in key US production facilities.
