Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur behind companies like Tesla and SpaceX, is reportedly planning to launch an artificial intelligence (AI) company to compete with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. According to the Financial Times, Musk is assembling a team of AI researchers and engineers and is in discussions with potential investors for the project.
This move represents a significant shift for Musk, who, only a few weeks ago, co-signed a letter requesting a six-month pause in AI research along with more than 1,800 others. However, it was later discovered that some signatures on the letter were fake.
Musk's business ventures already include Twitter, Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink (a neurotechnology research company), and The Boring Company (a tunnelling project). Now, he seems to be venturing into the rapidly evolving field of generative AI, where tech giants like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and startups like OpenAI are already competing.
For this new AI project, Musk is reported to have acquired thousands of high-powered GPU processors and recruited engineers from prominent AI labs, including DeepMind.
OpenAI was initially founded as a non-profit organization but later transformed into a for-profit startup after securing a $1 billion investment from Microsoft. Despite this, Musk has expressed concerns about the potential risks associated with generative AI models like GPT-4, the latest release from OpenAI. He particularly worries about their ability to spread false information and exhibit political bias.
With Musk's involvement, the landscape of generative AI is likely to become even more competitive as different players battle for dominance in this rapidly developing technology sector. However, specific details about Musk's AI company and its goals are yet to be disclosed officially.
