2023 Tapestry Design Prize for Architects launched

The Australian Tapestry Workshop has launched the 2023 Tapestry Design Prize for Architects (TDPA) - a unique contest that invites architects from around the world to design a tapestry for a hypothetical site.

The 2023 site is the award-winning Bundanon Art Museum, which was designed by Kerstin Thompson Architects. Entrants are challenged to design a site-specific tapestry that would articulate, transform and enrich the architectural space.

The TDPA is an initiative of Peter Williams, who is an architect and a former chair of the Australian Tapestry Workshop board. The prize celebrates the historical connection between architectural space and tapestry design. Since the inaugural prize was awarded in 2015, two winning designs have been made by the Australian Tapestry Workshop: Perspectives on a Flat Surface by Wardle and 22 Temenggong Road, Twilight by Justin Hill.

Entries will be judged by a panel comprising Jefa Greenaway (jury chair and founding director of Greenaway Architects), Kerstin Thompson (principal and design director of Kerstin Thompson Architects), Justin Hill (co-founder of Kerry Hill Architects and past TDPA winner), and Christina Na-Heon Cho (director of Cox Architecture).

Entries close 23 June 2023, and a winner will be announced on 6 September.

The winning architect/design team will be awarded a $10,000 cash prize, and a people's choice winner will receive $1,000.
